V.H.S. Diabetes Department had several questions for
the doctors. |

The question-answer
session came at the end of a programme held to mark
'World Diabetes Day' at the department here on Saturday.
Head of the V.H.S. Diabetes Department C.V. Krishnaswami
said millions of lives were saved since the discovery
of insulin in 1922. The department was observing 'World
Diabetes Day' in accordance with the World Health Organisation
theme for this year, which is children and adolescents
with diabetes. |

"Doctors are increasingly
becoming uni-centric specialists. They control the blood
sugar level of the patients but for the other problems
associated with diabetes, the patients are sent elsewhere,"
said VHS secretary N.S. Murali. He added that diabetes
needed to be looked at as a condition that affected
the whole body and merely controlling sugar levels was
not enough. |

Charity Wing, IIT Ladies Club, IIT (Madras), Jayshree
Ananth said they were involved in various social activities,
including, sponsoring the education of the children
of workers, adult literacy programmes, nutritious meal
schemes and also contributed to the VHS for juvenile
diabetic patients. |

"We are
fighting a battle against the demons of poverty, neglect
and ignorance. But the lesson we learned is that there
a lot of good people out there. There a lots of problems
waiting to be addressed and there are people willing
to join and put their shoulders to the wheel,"
she said. |
